As a nanny, saying goodbye to a family is one of the most stressful and difficult things to do. The nanny-family relationship being both professional and personal, when the day of the end of contract arrives, it can be emotionally very difficult.
It can even be difficult when the nanny has every right to quit because she is being abused or taken advantage of. I say this from personal experience, as I am a licensed childminder who works with the family.
Leaving a nanny job is never really easy. That said, this article is not about how to quit, but about how to write a thank you note for family before embarking on new adventures.
During my first years as a nanny with families, I had more positive experiences than negative ones.
And, despite the difficulties, I managed to almost always keep a close connection with the families for years to come. That said, I had other experiences that were quite the opposite.
Experiences in which the parents were so devastated that it was my last day with them, that they picked on me AND, even worse, their toddlers.
Because when the parents refuse to wish their nanny well and forbid her to be part of their lives simply because she quit, they not only hurt her, but also the little ones. cutie.
Not allowing children to say goodbye to their nanny on the last day? Not letting that great nanny say goodbye to them, just because they’re mad at her for leaving? It’s cruel. And that’s not healthy.
Wouldn’t it be better for their children to learn that sometimes people have to move on, but that doesn’t change the fact that that person loves them? That they are not abandoned?
Of course, a nanny can be made to leave for various reasons, but children are rarely the cause. Therefore, children should NEVER be punished for a nanny moving on to another chapter in her life.
Getting a goodbye letter from a nanny can make a difference, they can read it again whenever they need to. That’s why I find it’s the best way to say goodbye when the time is right.
I recommend it as well to thank the parents, but above all to leave a small written record for the children. So, here is a beautiful example of a letter full of love to inspire you to write yours!

What does a goodbye letter from a nanny look like?
“Dear (name of parents and children),
Time passes so fast. It’s time to say goodbye and I can’t leave without leaving you at least a little thank you note.
Thank you for looking after me this school year. I must say that I had a wonderful and fantastic year in (country/city), which broadened my vision and colored my experience.
I also thank you for showing me so many places and tasting a variety of delicious dishes from all over the world.
Also, a big thank you for the little gift you gave me for my departure, I will treasure it as preciously as a treasure and it will always remind me of the good times we shared.
I’m also happy to see that the manual activities we did together paid off, the children did really well to make it!
I still remember the first day I met you at our hiring meeting, I was so nervous, my French (or other language) wasn’t very good and I didn’t know anyone but you.
At the end of the year, it was you who encouraged me to participate in activities, meet new friends and take language courses at community colleges.
And every evening, at dinner, you asked me how my language course had gone, if I had made new friends, if I was happy with what I was learning, I will never forget that.
When I was sick or not feeling well, you brought me medicine and let me rest.
When I wanted to go somewhere, you recommended places and told me where to go to have fun and where to eat good food.
At Christmas, you also prepared many presents for me and gave me a week’s vacation. You were so attentive to me, that sometimes I had the impression that it was you who took care of me like a child and not the other way around!
During the winter holidays, you took me on a vacation in the mountains. You asked my coach to teach me to ski. It was the first time in my life that I skied thanks to you. And thanks to all of you, I wasn’t nervous, but I learned from my coach and enjoyed this vacation.
You also allowed me to meet your large family. Everyone was so nice to me that I felt as comfortable as they did with my family. Thanks to all of you, I feel like I have a second family and a second home on the other side of the world, filled with love and happiness.
I am also grateful to the children who always treated me like a big sister and shared with me all the interesting things that happened to them.
Even though sometimes the kids argued a bit with me, once they calmed down, they knew I was right, and then they always apologized to me and showed me a lot of respect.
Whenever I asked them to do their homework and practice the piano, they all behaved very well. In the future, I may consider continuing my studies to become a teacher and the year spent with Lexou, Mika and Yan has contributed a lot to this.
At the end of the school year, you even took me to Disneyland to play with the children. I really enjoyed this little getaway, it took me back to my childhood, I felt like a little girl again!
When Grandma visited us for a few weeks, we talked every day, we went shopping together to buy food. It was an honor to bond with her, I was able to learn a lot from her wisdom, she is absolutely wonderful!
During my stay with you, I really felt like I was in my own home. I really appreciate the way you treat me like family.
I appreciate everything you have done for me and it is with a sad heart that I leave you. I hope the children will have a healthy and happy life.
Usually I’m not a very expressive person, but when it comes to you, I think I can bravely express what I feel: I love you all very much and you will forever be etched in my heart and in my memory, I will never forget you!
Thank you all for giving me an unforgettable year! I hope you all can have a happy life and sincerely wish you happiness and prosperity in the future!
I would love for us to stay in touch, because I will miss you all more than I can even imagine.
I kiss you very much, lots of kisses to my little angels,
