Visy today broke ground on a $500 million glass recycling and remanufacturing plant outside Brisbane, Australia.
Visy’s largest investment to date, the facility will recycle up to 200,000 tonnes of Queensland glass per year to produce 1 billion bottles per year.
The site is scheduled to go live in 2025.
Anthony Pratt, Chairman of Visy, said: training.
“This will allow the majority of recyclable glass containers collected from Queensland’s Container Deposit Scheme, as well as street recycling bins, to be recycled here in Queensland.”
The facility will be located in Stapilton, just south of Brisbane, next to Visy’s current box and beverage can plants.
Once operational, it will support around 200 green collar manufacturing jobs and bring Visy’s Queensland workforce to over 1,000 people.
The project will also create over 600 jobs in the construction industry.
The project is underpinned by a long-term partnership with Asahi Soft Drinks and agreements with busy customers such as Lion, Bundaberg and Coca-Cola.
Pratt said the investment was made possible by the leadership of Queensland Prime Minister Anastasia Parašchuk, who joined Pratt at the groundbreaking ceremony, and government support for Australian manufacturing.
This is part of Pratt’s 2021 pledge to invest $2 billion in Australia’s recycling and clean energy infrastructure over the next decade, and will help thousands of green-collar, well-paid Australian workers. Create manufacturing jobs.
The facility brings Visy’s total investment in Australia to over $11 billion.
Visy plans to relocate its current glass recycling operations from South Brisbane in 2025.
