Friday Harbor – In 2021, SC Johnson Company, maker of town and home brands, launched a year-long pilot study to provide curbside collection and recycling of plastic film for residents of Friday Harbor. This program he finished in October 2022. Overall, the research was a success. This data provided SC Johnson Company with insight into how recyclable materials (unacceptable in “blue bottles”) can be put back into the economy where they are most profitable.

The Town and Lautenbach Recycling have partnered to continue the plastic film recycling program over the past year following overwhelming support from the Town’s residents.

All single-family homes currently collecting garbage are eligible to participate. Residents who choose to participate should consider clean and dry plastic bags, plastic storage bags such as Ziploc® brand bags, grocery and produce plastic bags, dry cleaning bags, and other flexible plastic films to be “plastic.” It should still be recycled by putting it in the ‘Film Only’ recycling. A bottle provided by the town earlier this year. Collection continues on the 4th Wednesday of each month. “This program is consistent with the town’s environmentally oriented values,” said Mayor Jackson. It’s an easy way to maintain and remove these toxics from landfills while reducing the amount of trash in your home.”

Meanwhile, Towne and Lautenbach look for ways to expand the program. Recent proposals include offering drop-off locations or expanding the program to include multi-family residential or commercial accounts.

“If we can recycle these plastics and reuse them in new products, less problematic waste will end up in landfills, saving more of our limited resources,” said Troy Rothenbach. A substitute for plastic bags and films. ”
