The Village of Scarsdale made history on Saturday, October 29, when it launched the first township municipal paint recycling program in Westchester County. This allows residents to take their leftover latex, oil paint, stain and varnish cans to 110 Secor’s recycling center. road. Monday through Saturday from 8am to 3pm, paint can be placed in bins next to food scrap recycling drop-off sites.
On opening day (October 29), resident volunteers, including Michelle Sterling and Ron Schulhoff, met with State Representative Amy Pauline, County Commissioner George Latimer, Scarsdale Mayor Jane Bellon, and Scarsdale Public Works. I was there with Jeff Coleman and Tyler Seifert from the department. A record number of residents came to the recycling center with empty cans to thank the way the debris was dropped off and recycled.
Note that residents no longer need to harden their paint. Simply place it in the original container with lid or cap and take it to the paint recycling area at the Scarsdale Recycling Center. No more cat litter. Collected paint is recycled into new paint, and cans are recycled into new metal.
Commenting on the program launch, Michelle Sterling said: And we want to set an example for other towns to make it part of their recycling programs. The more convenient it is for people to recycle, the more they recycle!
Approved paint products include:
House paints and primers (latex and oil-based)
Deck coatings, floor paints (including elastomers), concrete sealers
Clear finish (varnish, shellac, etc.)
Architectural paint for interior and exterior (latex-based, oil-based)
Field and lawn paint
metal coating, rust prevention
Waterproof concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellents (not tar or bitumen based)
Ron Schulhof, Michelle Sterling, Amy Paulin, Tyler Seifert, Jeff Coleman, George Latimer and Jane Veron surround Scarsdale’s new paint recycling bin.
