The City of San Diego is one step closer to complying with state laws mandating organic recycling.
On Monday, the city council approved a new agreement with eight of the city’s private trash haulers. The two companies will proceed to secure the additional equipment and personnel necessary to equip the apartment complex with environmentally friendly recycling bins.
Law SB 1383, a massive statewide climate action move, requires cities in California to recycle food and lawn waste separately from other recyclables. If San Diego doesn’t comply by her January deadline, it could face state-mandated fines.
Many single-family homes in San Diego already have green trash cans for yard waste, but organic food waste should also be recycled.
“This is a big change, but it was especially bad in San Diego. It’s an increase,” said the San Diego Union. – Tribune reporter David Garrick.
