Rowland Park, Kansas — Rowland Park is now the first city in the Kansas City area to sign a citywide deal with Ripple Glass.
The glass recycling service began in the first week of January with 2,900 Rowland Park households participating. As of Wednesday, three tons of glass had been collected.
Piercyn Charbonneau, commercial program coordinator at Ripple Glass, said: “We ended up with a set rate of about 44%, which was very good and we had to see.”
During the pilot, Ripple Glass said it collected 22,000 pounds of glass from about 700 households.
Roland Park resident Michelle Dorsey said, “We’re only doing it because we feel responsible. We’re here to protect each other and the planet. This is one way to do that.” ‘ said.
The program is partially funded by a grant from The Recycling Partnership, and the remainder is reflected in this year’s Solid Waste Services Assessment that is part of residents’ property tax bills.
At about $2.50 a month per household, 2023 residents are currently paying 0.76 cents a month, says Roeland Park city administrator Keith Moody.
“Roland Park is a truly climate positive community with great leaders and great residents,” says Charbonneau.
It is estimated that 275-400 tons of additional glass will be collected. 3 year contract with Roland Park.
