Canadian company Aduro Clean Technologies has partnered with the University of Western Ontario on a C$1.2 million (€882,000) R&D project to advance plastic recycling.
Aduro has patented water-based technology that chemically recycles plastics and converts heavy crude and renewable oils into resources and high-value fuels. Its expertise will support research led by academic Dr. Paul Charpentier over the next three years.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of contaminants in plastic raw materials such as food, organic waste, plasticizers and fillers under various conditions to maximize production, quality and yield. The project also aims to improve pre- and post-treatment technology.
A commercial goal is to develop strategies to minimize the cost of sorting and separation systems during pretreatment. The initiative is expected to enhance Aduro’s patented hydrochemical splitting process for chemical recycling of a mixture of post-consumer industrial and consumer plastics.
“This project is a great opportunity to collaborate with Aduro again,” says Charpentier. “Our work will also support the advanced training of many graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who will become industry leaders in chemical recycling tomorrow’s research.”
