Tuesday, November 1, 2022Pumpkins are considered garden waste and are not suitable for placement in organic recycling bins.
This summer, Crystal worked with Hennepin County to open an organic recycling site, but participants must first register with the county. Recycle bins are located near the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center on Douglas Drive.
“Residents can use green bags to collect organic matter and bring it in here 24/7,” explains Crystal Public Works Director Mark Ray. “One of the big reasons we’re looking to expand organics is not just the change in Hennepin County rules, but his one-third of all trash is organic.”
Organics include items such as fruits, vegetables, and meat debris, as well as items such as tissues, napkins, and pizza boxes.

If you’re registered with Hennepin County, you can recycle your organics in a container on Douglas Drive near the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center.

However, it does not include pumpkins, jack-o’-lanterns, and other fall gourds. These items can be brought into the pumpkin drop-off bin.
Brooklyn Park has a free drop-off container at Central Park across from the Brooklyn Park Operation and Maintenance Facility. Pumpkins can be delivered from November 1st (Tuesday) to November 7th (Monday). Pumpkins are composted and used in the soil. All candles, wax and ornaments should be removed before disposal. In Plymouth you can bring discarded pumpkins, gourds and apples to the Plymouth Maintenance Facility from November 1st to 14th. The waste becomes feed for livestock. Look for a trash can with a “Pumpkin Drop” sign on the west side of the facility. You will also be asked to remove all candles. Learn more about.
