If you live in Mount Vernon, you can get a free new trash can.

The city is giving out 2,000 to homeowners as part of its waste sustainability plan.

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said the goal is to improve green spaces across the city and comply with federal and state guidelines.

The city hopes to implement a plastic bag-free policy next year.

Residents must complete a form on the Mount Vernon DPW website or call to sign up if they want a bin.

Up to 1 per household, first come first served.

They will be distributed the first week of December until supplies last.
