Five-year liner supply and recycling service contract awarded to Swedish mining company Boliden
Helsinki – Finnish industrial machinery manufacturer Metso Outotec Corp. has signed a €35 million five-year service contract to supply rubber mill linings and recycled worn linings to Swedish metals and mining company Boliden.
As part of the 3+2 deal, Metso will provide Megaliner branded lining “supply and optimization services” for four mills at Boliden’s Kevitsa mine in the Sodankyla region of Finland.
The project also includes support for mill lining shutdown planning and execution services.
Additionally, the deal includes a “Planet Positive” mill lining recycling service for used liners.
Metso said it is implementing a recycling process for the project, which it said was achieved after “a decade of intensive development work and pilots”.
The technology includes a “proprietary” separation line for processing rubber and liners of all sizes, including both rubber and metal.
According to Metso, the new recycling service offers a way to solve the disposal problem of worn mill liners, reduce CO2 emissions and improve eco-efficiency.
As part of the service, Metso will collect the worn liner on site and transport it to a facility where the components are separated.
There, manufacturers reuse or recycle valuable materials such as new liner rubber and steel components.
Metso is initially offering recycling services to customers in Europe and aims to expand into new markets in 2023.
