Tackle World Bundaberg contributes to the environment by providing communities with a place to recycle old and broken fishing gear.
Rig Recycle is a program developed to reuse, repair and recycle recreational fishing gear and packaging to help divert landfills and reduce marine litter.
Products such as hooks, weights, swivels, hard plastic lures, plastic floats, hard clear plastic tackle packages, monofilament fishing line (not braided), plastic fishing line spools and handline spools can all be recycled through the program.
Tackle World Bundaberg now has a rig recycling station at its Quay Street shop, encouraging locals to bring their gear and put it in the bins provided.
The new recycling avenue is in the spotlight as part of National Recycling Week, November 7-13, 2022.
Tackle World recycling initiative inspired by ReefClean
Lenore Hanks, director of Tackle World Bundaberg, said the idea to join the recycling initiative came to him when the team attended a recent fishing show.
“We attended the AFTA (Australian Fishing Trade Association) show on the Gold Coast this August and the ReefClean team set up a rig dumpster at the show,” she said.
“Of course, we wanted to install rig dumpsters in our stores to reduce the flow of trash into the environment.”
Lenore said she is very conscious of the impact plastic has on the environment and encourages the community to think about their actions as well.
“I am aware that plastic and other debris can have a devastating effect on waterways,” she said.
“If our trash is not disposed of carefully, it can be blown or washed away into rivers and oceans, washed ashore hundreds of kilometers away, polluting coastlines and causing problems for ecosystems and wildlife. may become.
“We need to be conscious of our actions so that future generations can enjoy this beautiful planet.”
Items placed in the Trash are sorted for reuse, repair, or recycling.
“The repaired items are given a second life in the tackle box and donated to charity for the enjoyment of less fortunate anglers,” she said.
“All hard plastic is diverted to recycling facilities and items are turned into new products made to withstand several life cycles.
“By participating in our Rig Recycling Program, you are showing your support to reduce the amount of fishing litter that enters our waterways and landfills.
“We must lead by example and together we can make a difference!”
The program was launched as part of the ReefClean program provided by Tangaroa Blue and funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.
