Acadiana Waste Services (AWS) will provide garbage and recycling services to Lafayette and unincorporated areas next year.

This is the first time the public has participated in the bidding process to select new companies for these services, which are scheduled to start on November 1, 2023, according to Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG).

Lafayette Parish Councilman Joshua Carlson said the bidding process was extensive and many factors were considered.

“Price was a factor, recycling was a factor,” says Carlson. “There were a variety of factors that influenced the scores given to different bidders.”

City Councilman Patrick Lewis said taxpayers can expect a reduction in their garbage bills once the AWS deal comes into force.

“They were the lowest bidders,” Lewis said. “Because of the lower rates, our customers have a lower waste rate, which is a big plus.”

Chris Schouest, managing member of AWS, said the company will likely change the color of the bins, too.

“We believe trash cans will be black cans with red lids, and all recycling bins will be green cans,” said Shouest.

All residents can expect new 95-gallon trash cans and recycling bins next year, Shouest said.

Bradley McDonald, vice president of AWS, said the company will also incorporate innovative trucks to serve the community.

“It will be 30 or more. The new collection vehicles will be equipped with the latest technology in routing software, and we are excited about the new equipment,” McDonald said.

Under the new contract, city residents can expect to be paid $28.68 a month, while unincorporated parish residents can expect a $29.67 monthly trash fee, according to LCG.

Residents will also be encouraged to put tires on the side of the road for collection on “bulk days” from November 2023.
