Skokie, Illinois — Instead of throwing old Christmas lights in the trash, area residents can throw them outside the headquarters of the Skokie Public Works Authority until the end of this month.
Village staff positioned the container outside the main entrance at 9050 Gross Point Road. Drop-offs are available weekdays from 7 AM to 3:30 PM.
The Northern Cook County Solid Waste Authority has partnered with Elgin Recycling to implement the Holiday Lights Recycling Program.
Village staff announced that rope lights, LED lights, C7 or C9 lights, mini lights and extension cords are all acceptable as part of the program.
Public works crews will also begin collecting live Christmas trees this week, with more collections expected next week.
According to village staff, tree harvesting does not occur on a precise schedule and depends on weather conditions.
Residents were asked to keep the wood next to the garbage truck so it could be crushed into mulch.
