Honolulu-Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has been awarded a $312,000 competitive grant to build a plastic recycling research facility. This grant is part of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Climate Change Initiative to support the state’s DOT efforts in carbon reduction and sustainable building materials. FHWA’s news release on the Climate Challenge Awards can be read here.
HDOT plans to combine the award with other funding sources to establish Hawaii’s first plastic recycling research facility, expected to cost approximately $6 million in total. The facility, which he expects to be operational within two years, will enable him to transform waste plastic into new products that can be used in transportation infrastructure.
“Having a facility in Hawaii allows us to meet a real need for sustainable materials,” said Ed Sniffen, deputy director of highways for the Hawaii Department of Transportation. “Keeping our own plastic waste out of landfills in a way that improves roads and the environment would be of great benefit to everyone in Hawaii.”
