TekniPlex Healthcare showcases new fully transparent recyclable mid-barrier blister packaging (reported to be world’s first combination blister and lid) at PACK EXPO 2022 in Chicago (booth W-13043) doing. This material is recyclable where a #5 polypropylene recycle stream is available and features a polyolefin blister film combined with a barrier PP lidding film.
Melissa Green, Head of Global Marketing at TekniPlex Healthcare, explains that the new material is designed for pharmaceuticals, veterinary drugs, dietary supplements, supplements, and personal care (dental or cosmetic applications). . “Anything requiring a medium level barrier (PDVC coated PVC range of 40-90 grams) can be packaged in this blister + lid combination. Currently, only peelable lids with barrier properties are available. It’s possible,” she says, noting that if the application calls for a push-through lid, the combination of blister and lid is not suitable.
Recently, there are many sustainable blister upgrades on the market, including recyclable non-barrier transparent packaging, recyclable white barrier packaging and recyclable barrier transparent blister film. But Green says:
From a manufacturing perspective, initial machinability analyzes are good, with large-scale testing planned for the near future.
Advantages of transparent materials
As companies evolve and make sustainable upgrades to their packaging, packaging transparency is an important feature that brand owners should keep in mind to benefit patients and caregivers.
“Having the ability to identify the right medication before removing it from its protective packaging is very important. It also improves patient compliance with visible confirmation via the empty blister,” says Green. says Mr. “Other advantages of transparent packaging lie in the manufacturing and inspection process. Oral solids packaged in blister packs are subject to errors in color and size (dosage), broken or missing tablets, and empty tablets. It must be inspected for defects such as pockets in the blister package itself.Clear packaging makes it much easier to assess and identify these potential manufacturing defects and sort out bad packaging and improve patient safety.”
