Syracuse, NY (WSYR-TV) – Sunnking, a company that collects and recycles electronics, will be hosting its final free drive-thru recycling event on Saturday. The company said it may scale back the popular event.
Marketing director Robert Burns said these events in the Syracuse area draw about 2,000 people. “They love it. We’ve been doing these for years. People drive by and say it’s so easy.”
Effective January 2023, New York’s Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act requires manufacturers to provide free and convenient recycling of e-waste to consumers statewide. Before these regulations were passed, some companies charged fees for recycling electronics.
“We recycle about 75,000 pounds every day, or 25 million pounds a year, which costs millions and tens of millions of dollars,” Burns said.
Barnes said there will likely be no more drive-thru events as recycling will be free.
“We’ll be opening up a few hundred more drop-off locations near you and making them free, but like I said, we’ll probably have to look at how many of these large-scale events.
Burns feels the change is good for consumers.
“As far as consumers are concerned, there’s no charge to take your electronics anywhere you go. We don’t charge consumers to leave big TVs or small phones anywhere in the state,” Barnes said. continues Mr.
The Sun King event at the New York State Fairgrounds is already sold out.
