The Ocala City Water Resources Authority will hold a Cooking Oil Recycling Day on Tuesday, November 29th.
According to the city, the event will be held in two locations:
- Water Reclamation Facility #2 (4200 SE 24th Street) Tuesday, November 29, 7am-2pm
- Ocala Wetland Recharge Park (2105 NW 21st Street) Tuesday, November 29, 12:00pm to 5:00pm
Collection should be of vegetable oil only and in closed containers.
With the popularity of frying turkey on Thanksgiving, the city of Ocala is encouraging residents to plan how to dispose of cooking oil. Recycling cooking oil is a way to eliminate the amount of oil that ends up in drains, reduce waste and make a positive impact on the environment.
The city lists the following steps for recycling cooking oil.
- Get a plastic container or jug with a lid.
- Place the used vegetable oil (FOG) in a container and store it in a safe place.
- Bring the full container to a recycling location.
If FOG is poured into the drain, it will coat the inside of the pipe and solidify, obstructing the flow of wastewater and causing backflow.
The event is part of the Water Resources Authority’s “Save the Pipes” campaign, which focuses on educating Ocala residents to keep fat, oil and grease (FOG) out of their drains. Instead, the resident should put her FOG in the trash or dispose of it properly through a recycling program.
