PFLUGERVILLE, TX (KXAN) — Many veterans leaving the service need some help transitioning. Pflugerville veterans want to make it easier by taking out the trash.

Joshua Schaefer said, “I think it’s probably one of the hardest things to do, to have a set schedule and to know what to do each day to be a more responsible and independent citizen. increase.

After serving eight years as a combat medic in the military, Schaefer is now the owner of JDog Junk Removal & Hauling in Fluggerville.

“Get rid of all unnecessary things in your home,” he explained.

He offers job opportunities to other veterans like Miguel Zamaron, who recently discharged from the Army.

“Depending on their work in the military, it’s kind of hard for them to transfer to the civilian world like I did,” Zamaron said.

A team of veterans help remove unwanted items from homes and businesses around Austin.

Kyle’s resident Steve Wendt is a Navy veteran who hired them to clean up the yard.

“If it’s veteran-owned, I have a choice, and all things being equal, I’ll choose a veteran-owned business because I’m one,” Wendt said. increase.

But garbage doesn’t just end up in landfills. JDog has found another way to reuse items.

“One of our goals is to donate, recycle or reuse 60-80% of what we take so that it can be used by someone else,” Schaefer said. .

Another goal is to increase employment of veterans.

According to the Texas Labor Commission, the veterans’ unemployment rate in May 2021 was nearly 6%. Schaefer wants it to be below 1%.

“They are hardworking and dedicated to getting the job done,” Schaefer said.

As a former military man, Wendt stands by it.

“Many men have PTSD, and I don’t think there are enough resources for them,” says Wendt.

JDog Junk Removal & Hauling will host a grand opening celebration Saturday at the Lake Pflugerville Pavilion. The event will be highlighted by ribbon cutting, food trucks, a petting zoo, pony rides and inflatable attractions.

The brand new business also has used clothing and non-perishable food drives since Thanksgiving is so close.
