Marlborough – Initially started as a sideline for William Shomphe. But then, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Haul Away Junk Removal became Shomphe’s main career focus.
“When COVID hit, I was fired from Ford Motors, where I was a crash technician. I’m talking “I didn’t want to attract unemployed people, so I sold a few cars. [a] Buy two trucks a boat and a motorcycle to start this junk removal business. And, to my surprise, it works. ”
Shomphe decided not to return to Ford, instead opting to focus full-time on the junk-removal business he started two years ago.
The quality of service provided by Haul Away has been a hot topic in the community. Just ask Marlborough resident Lina Rofulment.
“They were very professional, kind and friendly, and stuck to the price they quoted,” said Rofulment, who contacted the company to remove the treadmill, table, sofa and a few bags of garbage. “I would definitely recommend them to anyone.”
Haul Away is licensed and insured and cleans basements, attics and storage rooms in addition to mattresses, appliances and snow removal. Haul Away also does demolition work.
Shomphe said he has built strong relationships with residential and commercial clients and has good civic relations with the city of Marlborough.
He has donated his time and services to support the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Junk Day program, allowing customers to bring in junk they wish to remove and dispose of.
The average cost of Haul Away’s junk removal service is between $280 and $350. Haul Away’s biggest job to date was clearing out a Marlborough motel that needed to be emptied of 75 units, including 250 mattresses.
As for mattresses, Shomphe sees recycling mattresses as a potential way to grow his business.
Such a move coincides with a proposal by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to add mattresses to its list of prohibited wastes in landfills.
“Mattresses are 90% recyclable,” says Shomphe. “Especially since there are only about one or two other places in the area that can accommodate it, so we’re trying to facilitate the means to handle it.”
Shomphe also wants to strengthen the trash rental side of his business. This allows clients to dispose of their trash at a leisurely pace before Haul Away removes it.
For all the things Haul Away removes, one thing the business does not remove is the 10% discount it offers to seniors, veterans and first responders.
“We respect the elderly and appreciate the service of the military,” said Shenkhu. “They all need a break.”
As a result, Shomphe is grateful for the great opportunity.
“I knew business was going well,” he said. “But I didn’t know it would work so quickly.”
