PAULDING – The Poulding Village Council narrowly rejected the committee’s recommendation to hire a full-time EMT at its regular meeting on Monday, November 7th.
However, council members said more work needs to be done to consider whether to move forward.
EMS was addressed in three different agendas: the Commission’s Report, the Mayor’s Report, and Citizens’ Comments.
Mayor Greg White announced that Sue Crosland will serve as interim EMS coordinator until a replacement is hired.
Trustee Dan Workman reported on the October 24 Safety Committee meeting. They discussed potential full-time his EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and coordinator duties.
The committee recommended that the council proceed with hiring one full-time EMT for 60 hours per week. 35 hours on station, 25 hours on call. There is no fixed salary structure.
A motion to accept the commission’s report constitutes approval of the recommendation for adoption. The Council rejected the motion with Senators Barb Life, Randy Dager and Lois Beamer voting against, Tim Voss and David Birch voting yes, and Workman abstaining. did.
Mayor White said, “We’re going to either hire or not hire.
“If you want to continue we can still flesh out [details] Then we can vote again until we’re all satisfied,” Rife said.
Paulding EMT’s Andrea Schad, Kara Hart and Thomas Shrider were in attendance on Monday. Initially, Schad said she backed the idea of adding her full-time EMT to all three, but she now urges the council to look into the matter further, she said. said.
“We need to actually look at it, not just say ‘Okay, hire someone,'” she told the council. “We can’t afford to pay nearly $50,000 a year for over two years. …There’s nothing left in our budget.”
The $50,000 figure is clearly an estimated salary and benefits expense for a full-time EMT.
“I’m not saying don’t take applications and start looking for a full-time job, but it’s not feasible for more than a few years, so the three of us are here tonight,” Shad continued.
“I think there are other paths you can take before pursuing full-time,” Schrider said.
Boss said the council said it would be difficult to find volunteers to cover the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Schad replied that if the council looked at the schedule, there would be problems on weekends as well. Especially in the summer, because nobody wants to run on weekends. She claims that even when someone is hired, they sometimes miss the call.
Several other EMS topics were briefly discussed, but at the end of the conversation Mr Schad told the Council: The council thanked the trio for their input.
The Council asked Finance Director Cheryl Halter to review the tax rate for the EMS levy and whether it should be updated as an alternative levy.
Residents are reminded that collection of bagged leaves will continue on Mondays and Thursdays until further notice. Bags must be tied and placed on the curb for pickup.
Halter reported that utility billing software is finally up and running. If there are any mistakes or problems with this month’s bill, please contact the village office.
Some additional services may be available, such as setting up automatic payments. Halter will consider options after the beginning of the year.
Halter has begun work on the village’s 2012 budget. She and her administrator, Jason Vance, have met with the Water Department to review budgetary needs, but still need to meet with the Highways Department and the Police Department. A Finance Committee meeting has been set for Tuesday, November 15th.
Vance is working on a revised 2023 cemetery mowing and park mowing contract and will have to go out to bid.
Aldermen asked Vance for a spreadsheet of the status of the Vacant Building Registration Program. Vance said several more notices have been sent to the building owners.
Mayor White thanked Sean Brewer and Paulding High School students for helping clean up downtown. He said they worked hard and did a great job.
