Recycling pick-up is on a bi-weekly schedule
- Our recycling service is a single sort where you can put all your recycling in one cart. Street recycling will be collected every other week on the same day as the current collection day. This means that if you collect your recycle on Tuesday, your recycle will continue to be collected every other Tuesday.
- Recycling is collected on the same day as garbage collection.
- Please see the recycling label attached to the cart.
- View a detailed recycle list. Glass bottles are also recyclable.
- Overflowed cardboard bundles or recyclable bags can be put out for collection, but they must be clearly marked as ‘recyclable’. If this happens regularly, we recommend a larger cart or multiple carts.
Garbage pickup and extra garbage tags
- Garbage collection is done once a week on the same day. In other words, if you collect garbage on Tuesday, garbage will be collected every Tuesday.
- Spare garbage tags are available at the Intergovernmental Center at 10 Civic Center Plaza or Hy-Vee at 2010 Adams Street for an additional charge of $3.50 per bag.
- For more information, please see Garbage Service.
Placing the cart
- park the cart on the curb Not on the city roads (with the steering wheel facing the house, about 3 feet away from the obstacle), as the cart interferes with other services. If you live in an area with street parking, put the cart at the entrance of the driveway Or the cart may not empty if blocked by a parked vehicle. It is important that carts are not left on the sidewalk for pick-ups so that everyone can move safely.
- Please put out the garbage and recycling cart after 6:00 pm the night before collection. Please remove carts by 12:00 noon the day after collection to avoid additional charges.
- It is important to keep the cart lid closed as additional charges may be incurred if the cart is full. Additional charges may also apply if untagged garbage bags are left next to the garbage cart.
- After the trash and recycle has been collected, remove the cart from the curb and store it inside the building (such as a garage) or behind any required front yard setbacks.
Cart options and costs
Mankato residents can choose from three different cart sizes. 65 and 95 gallons. The goal is to increase recycling and reduce waste, so the recycling cart should be the same size or larger than the trash cart.
- $13 per month for 35 gallons
- 65 gallons $18.92/month
- 95 gallons $29.55/month
Duplex has a choice of 1 set of 95 gallon trash and recycling carts for $29.55/month.
Triplex or Fourplex with individual water meters can choose a minimum of two sets of 95 gallon trash and recycling carts for $59.10 per month. To opt out, you must contract with a garbage and recycling contractor.
Cart exchange
Property owners can exchange trash and recycling cart sizes once a year free of charge. All other cart replacements will cost $10 each (excluding home ownership changes).
Cart Damaged, Lost or Stolen
Customers are responsible for keeping City-issued recycling and trash carts safe while in use, including cleaning as necessary.
