Auckland residents will be able to safely and legally dispose of their bulky items in a series of free drop-off events known as Bulky Block Party, the city announced Thursday.
The popular Bulky Block Party event, which was piloted in 2018 and expanded into a monthly service, attracted hundreds of residents each month. The event was suspended in March 2020 due to pandemic safety concerns, but with safer practices and conditions in place, the city is happy to offer the event again.
The Bulky Block Party event will be held at a city facility at 7101 Edgewater Drive in East Oakland.The first event Saturday, May 22nd, 9am to 1pmAfter that, the event will be held at the same location from June 26th to the last Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm. This event is open to all Auckland residents.
City staff and community members are required to wear face coverings and adhere to all other COVID-19 safety measures at the event.
The series also serves as a promotion for Auckland’s curbside bulk pickup service. all Residents can dispose of oversized garbage free of charge. To make an appointment, contact Alameda County Waste Management at 510-613-8710 or csnorthbay@wm.com.

Residents who use the Bulky Block Party event are greeted with a smile, provided with information about the Bulky Pickup service, and assisted in unloading their waste.
Terms:
- Bulky Block Party is open to Auckland residents only. Proof of residency such as a household bill is required (no businesses please).
- Curbside bulk pickup service is provided by Alameda County Waste Management as part of the City of Oakland’s Zero Waste Program. Information about curbside bulk pickup services is available online at www.oaklandrecycles.com/bulky-pickup-services. Homeowners and property managers can contact Waste Management directly by calling (510) 613-8710 to schedule a bulky pickup.
- Tenants are entitled to one bulk pickup per year per living unit. To access the service, the lessor can ask the property manager to schedule a pickup. Property managers are required by law to provide tenants with access to bulky pickup services. Property managers can also sign waivers that allow tenants to schedule waste management and direct pickup.
Illegal dumping has increased over the years in Auckland. OPW performs more than 30,000 garbage collections annually, almost triple the work done just 10 years ago. The city’s resources to deal with this problem were slashed during the Great Recession, and the effects were felt quickly as dumping increased. Since then, city and community leaders, community advocates, and OPW staff have worked steadily to restore and improve these services.
Thursday’s announcement marks an ongoing series of announcements and deployments of new, restored or improved services that will help address these challenges and provide a clean and healthy Auckland for all communities. Here’s the latest: In April, the city announced a staffing increase for OPW’s Garbage Blitz Crews. This crew provides active dump collection services in known illegal dump hotspots and corridors.
