After more than 15 months, Clay County plans to resume recycling on the streets.
Pickups will resume on Dec. 5 in unincorporated areas of Clay County and the city of Keystone Heights, the county announced Thursday.
In August 2021, on-street recycling was suspended because the county’s waste contractor, Waste Management, did not have enough commercial drivers.
At the time, Waste Management was short of 10 drivers. A year later, the company was short of 11 drivers, but Waste Management now has the drivers it needs to service all routes in Clay County, he said. County said.
Waste Management lured potential employees with a $5,000 contract bonus and increased wages from $16 to $24 an hour when recycling was stopped.
Here’s what residents need to know as recycling resumes.
- Residents can start requesting bins now if they want. Garbage cans can be requested online through the Clay Connected platform on the county’s homepage and the Garbage and Recycling web page. Residents can also request bins through the free Clay Connected app. This app is available for Android and Apple devices in the app store. - Waste Management will begin distributing bins to residents on November 14th.
- Residents will be required to have two separate trash cans in their homes by December 5th. - Waste Management will continue to service seven temporary recycling drop-off sites through December 18th. The container will be removed on December 19th.
Clay County’s recycling stop lasted much longer than Duval County.
Clay County Commissioners voted on June 28 to give residents back the money they paid for recycling. This deduction applies to your 2022 property tax bill.
County officials stress that people should follow recycling guidelines. Flatten all boxes and do not put plastic bags in bins.
