Minimize your research’s environmental footprint
How can we conduct scientific research in an environmentally sustainable manner while ensuring research safety, quality and impact?
We asked members of the chemical science community to share their views and experiences on this topic.their reaction is our new Sustainable Institute We would like to inform you about our ongoing efforts to report and support the community’s efforts towards creating greener labs.
Why is this job important?
Science and technology are key to a more sustainable future, from tackling disease to developing new technologies to generate clean energy.
Laboratories at universities, research institutes, hospitals and companies are essential for research, analysis and teaching. Several disciplines are often grouped together requiring wet, dry and computational facilities of varying configurations and sizes.
However, laboratory buildings, processes, and equipment, by their very nature, can be resource and energy intensive. Temperature control, ventilation, or a high degree of sterility may be required to safely conduct high-quality research. Procurement, manufacturing and disposal of specialized laboratory consumables and instruments also have an environmental footprint.
our Sustainable Institute report
Our report reveals what chemists are already doing to reduce the environmental footprint of their research, while continuing to deliver breakthrough discoveries and innovations that make the world a better place. We also share the barriers and trade-offs we face in making sustainability-related change, as well as the many opportunities for collaboration and other positive actions.
