From climate and environment editor Zachary Goldfarb, climate and environment deputy editor Juliet Eilperin, and climate and environment visual enterprise editor Monica Urmanu:
We are pleased to announce that Niko Kommenda has joined the Climate & Environment division as Graphics Reporter.
Nico joined the Post after working as a reporter on the Visual Story Team at the Financial Times. His interactive features include visualizations of the logistics and hurdles the European Union needs to overcome to wean itself off Russian gas, as well as data from nearly 100 million flights showing the aviation industry’s recovery after the coronavirus crisis. Includes analytics.
Niko has experience analyzing and mapping large datasets, searching for stories that highlight how social and economic inequalities exacerbate the impacts of climate change. In 2019, his climate portfolio was named Best Young Data His Journalist of the Year at the Sigma Awards.
Originally from Austria, Niko moved to the UK to study Computational Journalism at Cardiff University, a pioneering joint honors course that combines journalism and computer science. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking and surfing the beaches of South West England.
Join Nico’s welcome to the post. His first date is his November 21st.
