I commend Senator Lisa Markowski for supporting the Kigali Amendment in principle. If Alaska and the rest of the United States are improving their environmental standards, other countries like China must take responsibility for doing the same.
The Kigali Amendment urges countries to reduce their use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in refrigeration and air conditioning, and in doing so encourages the production of innovative alternative technologies. For the US, this means stopping being a dumping ground for China’s outdated products and instead adding thousands of jobs to the next generation of manufacturing as the US and the world adopt alternatives. However, the U.S. business community does not necessarily agree. Along with climate change activists, leaders on both sides, including influential figures such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers We support legislation like the Kigali Amendment to help domestic producers.
As a young American, I care deeply about the climate issue and thank Senator Murkowski for pushing for this common sense solution. I want more leaders to meet this challenge by holding other nations responsible for pollution and boosting clean manufacturing in America.
