After a seven-month vacancy, Middlebury has appointed Jesse Stratton as its new Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Compliance (EHS). He started his new role on October 3rd.
Vice President of Administration and Chief Risk Officer Mike Thomas announced Stratton’s arrival in an October 12 email to the Middlebury community, describing him as “a co-leader of employee safety and compliance. described as an advocate.
As a lifelong Vermont resident who grew up right by Snow Bowl, Stratton has deep ties to the Middlebury region.
“When presented with the opportunity to potentially attend Middlebury, it was one I could not pass up and I am humbled to have been chosen to attend,” Stratton said. Told.
Growing up surrounded by the Vermont landscape developed a love for nature and the environment, especially aquatic ecosystems, which led me to study freshwater and marine biology at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
“That education led to a career in public policy advocating for the needs of farming communities, particularly with regard to water quality and neighborhood conflict resolution,” Stratton said. “Shortly after returning to Vermont after college, he was approached by the group that would become Atlas Technical Consulting.”
Atlas Technical Consulting is a full-service environmental consulting firm with over 40 locations nationwide. Stratton worked at the Vermont branch in Williston, Vermont. “I started out as an entry-level technician and eventually worked my way up to a senior management position in the company,” says Stratton. “This role allowed me to return to a more hands-on role supporting a variety of construction and infrastructure projects in Vermont, New England and New York.”
Stratton has been with Atlas for 17 years and has been able to build customer connections both locally and nationally. One of the connections he forged was with Middlebury, as Forrest had several opportunities to work with the university over the years, starting with his hall renovation project in 2010.

“While our primary contact with the university was through our facility, it led to contact with numerous departments around campus,” Stratton said. “In particular, I provide guidance and support on hazardous material assessments, indoor air quality concerns, permits, Covid-19 controls (HVAC ratings and capacity concerns), and other environmental and safety-related issues. This has given me an understanding of the different buildings and unique needs that make up Middlebury, Breadloaf and Snowbowl in particular, and I look forward to learning more about Middlebury and all its entities in my new role. I am doing it.”
Stratton is Middlebury’s third Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Compliance. This position has existed for the past 25 years, with the title changing from Coordinator to Director two years ago.
Stratton said he will work with the entire Middlebury community, including faculty, staff and students, to maintain the university’s commitment to health and safety.
“This includes OSHA training, staff and agency-wide risk assessment and mitigation efforts, Covid-19 operational support, personal protective equipment, first aid and CPR, coordination of environmental submissions, and more.
