Environmental DNA refers to biological DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that exists in the environment such as water and soil. Organisms leave traces of DNA in the environment along with feces and mucus. In recent years, there have been significant advances in technology (environmental DNA technology) to identify the types of organisms that live there by extracting and analyzing biological DNA from water and soil collected outdoors. Environmental DNA techniques require much less workload at the research site than traditional biological investigation methods that rely on capture and direct observation. Therefore, environmental DNA technology is attracting attention as an epoch-making method to realize multi-point, high-frequency biological surveys, which was difficult with conventional survey methods.
