The Tangaroa Blue Foundation invites ocean lovers to ReefClean’s annual Great Barrier Reef Cleanup on Saturday, October 22nd from 8am to 1pm at Farnborough Beach in Yeppoon.
Now in its fourth year, the annual ReefClean Great Barrier Reef Cleanup is one of the largest events of its kind, mobilizing communities around the reef to clean up hundreds of kilometers of shoreline .
“Last year volunteers collected a staggering 25 tons of debris across all events and we hope to surpass that this year,” said Heidi Tait, CEO of Tangaroa Blue.
The call to clean up was made after Australia’s Marine Litter Initiative database showed single-use plastic items among the top 10 items of litter impacting the Great Barrier Reef and its surrounding waterways.
“Environmental stewardship at the community level is essential to redirecting the flow of marine debris around the Great Barrier Reef,” said Tate.
“The event is free to attend, and attendees will be provided with all the equipment and information they need to make a difference that day,” says Tait.
“By coming together as a community and documenting the types of marine debris that continue to impact our reefs, we can work with industry and government to get the data we need to solve this problem once and for all.”
ReefClean is funded by the Australian Government Reef Trust and provided by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, AUSMAP, Capricornia Catchments, Eco Barge Clean Seas, OceanWatch Australia, Reef Check Australia and South Cape York Catchments.
