For many of us, autumn, when the trees are turning colors and the “leaf peepers” taking in the scenery, is the time to rake up fallen leaves and prepare our gardens for winter. It’s also the time when nature provides a protective cover for smaller plants in the form of leaves.

But if too many leaves are falling and suffocating your lawn, it might be time to rake! Don’t think those leaves are a waste! (The Harpswell Solid Waste Ordinance defines “garden waste” as “cutting grass, leaves, and other plant matter other than wood waste and land clearing debris.”) Town Recipes You can get value by composting them using one of the great methods described in. Composting guideavailable at tinyurl.com/3jphmkus.

This guide offers insights on: It’s easier and cheaper than bagging these wastes and hauling them to a staging station, and safer than burning them. If you have a garden, lawn, trees, shrubs, or even planter boxes, you can use compost. By using compost, you can return organic matter to the soil in a usable form. ”

Please note that this guide refers to transfer stations, not recycling centers. This is because Harpswell’s recycling center cannot process debris from the garden (“garden waste”). Much better to recycle using the guide method. Even the Garbage to Gardens composting bins can’t handle the amount of garden waste they produce. For disposal, garden waste must be brought to the transfer station.

To remove invasive plants from your garden (see Resources link on the Harpswell Invasive Plant Partnership website. hippmaine.orgabout exotic plants), be sure to follow it guidelines From Transfer Station available at tinyurl.com/ycka5f69. Invasive plant waste should be placed in heavy-duty contractor-style garbage bags and tied or sealed. These bags need to be weighed just like any other brush or garden waste. there is.

Note: If you have large logs, ask where they can be stored if other residents may use them as firewood.

Harpswell has a lot of information about recycling centers and transfer stations. web page, tinyurl.com/5n8n3usf, to help manage all your solid waste. This page contains details of everything that can be recycled.
