The annual wood litter beach cleanup is scheduled for next week. Work will begin first from Waikanae Beach to Midway His Surf Club and then at Uawa.
Michelle Frey, the council’s director of livable communities, said, “Given the heavy rains in March this year which added to the debris on the beaches, the council’s clean-up budget is one of the most frequently used areas. Priority will be given to the beach section.”
Downer directs the work. Frey reminds beach users to stay away from equipment while beach cleanups are taking place.
The council has been tracking the weather and the path of the cyclone and has decided to begin work on Waikanae Beach and Midway Beach between October 25th and 30th.
Woody debris was last removed from the beach in December 2021. This was followed by an unexpected rainfall that occurred just two weeks after the pre-Labor Weekend cleanup.
“We’re doing our best to avoid a repeat of last year, when cleaning was done over Workers’ Weekend and the work had to be redone the following week due to heavy rains,” says Frey.
“We also took into consideration that there were no event bookings at Waikanae Beach until October 29th.
We understand that this is disappointing, but we hope the community understands our limitations and wants to be as cost effective as possible. ”
The Board plans to consider early next year a draft Wood Debris Policy that proposes developing a long-term approach to managing the problem of wood debris on beaches in the region and how to pay for it. .
