SRP
The SRP is responsible for keeping the canal system operational during normal water supply. Once the canal dries up, the SRP, as well as other utilities and local governments, will be able to carry out construction and maintenance activities in and around the canal.
The Salt River Project will begin its annual canal cleaning and repairs on Friday.
This work may close access to some areas, including Arizona Falls on Indian School Road.
Over time, the canal becomes filled with vegetation and debris such as shopping carts, tables and chairs, and even cars.
SRP stocks them with white amur, also known as grass carp, to clear out weeds.
So every year SRP collects fish and drains part of the waterway for cleaning and maintenance.
This year includes remediation of monsoon damage. The project should be completed by early February.
