Two people were killed in a flash flood on the Greek island of Crete last weekend.

according to Guardianthe body of Kostas Bergakis was found Saturday in his car, trapped when a violent storm hit the Greek island.

The discovery follows an extensive search of the vehicle’s passengers as rescue workers recovered the body of a second woman on Sunday in the Mediterranean Sea off Agia Pelagia, a seaside resort northwest of Crete’s capital, Heraklion. related to the activity.

The victim, a 49-year-old mother of two, was swept out to sea while trying to get out of a flooded car.

The deaths come after a weekend storm brought four months’ worth of rain to coastal villages in a matter of hours, flooding roads, shops and homes.

In Agis Pelagia and Sitia, east of the island where a state of emergency was declared, images emerged of cars and other debris submerged in seawater.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Giorgos Zervakis, the mayor of Sitia.

“The situation is out of control,” the mayor added. “There were landslides, roads were closed, cars were impassable, and roads turned into rivers.”
