HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Papahanaumokuakea Marine Litter Project removed 53 tons of marine debris from Hawaii Atolls located within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
The project cleaned up for the second time this year and the team returned to Honolulu on Sunday, November 13th. The wreckage included 64,000 pounds of his ghost net removed from the reef, along with 32,530 pounds of ghost nets and 9,125 pounds of marine plastic debris. coastline.

The cleanup expedition lasted 30 days and involved a team of 16 free divers.
PMDP has a strategic five-year plan to remove 57 tonnes of marine debris that accumulates in PMNMs each year.
Teams also salvage a derelict lifeboat stranded in Manawai [Pearl and Hermes Atoll] over 1 year. The lifeboats posed a danger to marine life in the area due to fuel, battery and engine fluid leaks and entrapment of seabirds.
According to PMDP, thousands of wildlife species live in the PMNM area.
Twenty-five percent of all marine species in the PMNM region are found only in the Hawaiian Islands.
Seventy percent of all tropical shallow-water coral reefs in the United States are in the Hawaiian Islands.
75% of Hawaii’s length comes from the uninhabited Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
