Emergency services in New South Wales are facing the largest flooding operation in the state’s history, with thousands displaced and hundreds rescued from flooded homes and communities. ABC News Reported.
This is as decontamination continues in South Australia and Victoria.
New South Wales:
The Lachlan River near the town of Forbes, New South Wales, is approaching its predicted peak of about 10.8 meters, similar to the record level set in 1952.
Flooding has yet to peak, so Forbes’ Mayor Phyllis Miller estimates that two-thirds of the town is already flooded.
A Fire Emergency New Zealand team has landed to provide rescue to exhausted SES crews who have been dealing with flooding for months in the Forbes area.
In Yugoura, at least 225 buildings were damaged by the floods, according to NSW SES.
Meanwhile, rescue workers continue to search for 85-year-old Levžek, who is reported missing as flood waters hit Yugoura. The last time he spoke to his relatives from his car was around 9:30 am on Monday.
The search was resumed yesterday after the body, believed to be that of another Yugoura resident, Diane Smith, was found.
Victoria:
As the cleanup of Victoria’s floods continues, King Charles has sent a letter of support to the Governor of Victoria.
The King said he and his wife were tracking “terrible” flooding in Victoria and sent words of support to those in Victoria affected.
“Our hearts are with all those affected and for the loss they have suffered,” he said.
Flooding in the state began in early October, with northern Victoria being the hardest hit.
In northeast Victoria, two men were found dead in floodwaters in mid-October in another incident. Hundreds of homes were flooded across the state, and towns such as Echuca and Kelan were evacuated.
Debris is still being cleared in many areas, and October, the wettest month on record, wreaked havoc on state roads.
South Australia:
In South Australia, nearly 40 schools remain without power after a severe storm over the weekend.
Department of Education Chief Executive Martin Westwall said hundreds of SACE students will be taking the exam today.
“The SACE board has processes in place to ensure that no student is at a disadvantage for not taking an exam today, as is the case with bushfires, student illness, etc.,” he said. I got
The severe thunderstorm produced over 100,000 lightning strikes and generated winds of up to 106 km/h.
Over 30,000 homes and businesses remain without power.
This follows a peak in which 163,000 customers were left in the dark as the state suffered its worst blackout since a statewide blackout in 2016.
