Hughes Springs, Texas (KLTV) – Work continues Sunday to assess the damage at Hughes Springs and determine what can be rescued.

Many are trying to process the extent of what happened in Hughes Springs on Friday.

KLTV’s Bob Hallmark reports from the Hughes Springs Fire Station damaged by Friday’s severe weather.

Hughes Springs also receives a lot of support from neighboring communities. Nearby agencies have assured the city that they will work together to cover the area’s fire response until Hughes Springs secures an alternate site for its fire brigade to operate.

“There were departments hundreds of miles away,” said Fire Chief Jay Cates. “Everyone has heard about our situation and they have offered help. It’s sad, but if we don’t accept help, please know that we are grateful.

For now, the fire department is trying to recover the records and equipment. Insurance plays a big role in when we can rebuild, and recovery is expected to take a long time.

There is also a lot of debris around Hughes Springs that needs to be cleared, which can take 3-4 days.
