No one likes to see dirt, dust, or other marks on their computer monitors. Not only is it ugly, it’s also distracting in the right lighting conditions. That’s why this guide will show you how to clean up your computer monitor in a few easy steps.
Things necessary
Microfiber cleaning cloth: These are useful for wiping dust and debris off your screen. Do not use paper towels or other household cloths. These types of materials can scratch the display panel.
Screen cleaning liquid: Found at an Amazon hardware store, this helps clean the screen to remove smudges and marks. Make sure the solution or wipe is safe for your electronics. Do not use cloths or solutions containing bleach or soap as they can damage the screen.
Compressed air: You can use compressed air to remove large particles of dust and debris from your monitor.
water: Water works great as a screen cleaner when combined with a microfiber cloth.

Step 1: Power off the monitor and do a basic wipedown
To begin the cleaning process, unplug the monitor from power, turn it off, and make sure it has cooled down. Also remove any cables that may be attached. This will prevent you from shocking or damaging your screen during the initial cleaning. Also, don’t use any screen cleaning solutions yet. This is a basic wipe to remove dirt and dust.
- Hold a microfiber cloth in your hand or fold it if the cloth is too big.
- Hold the cloth up to the front of the display and place it on the screen where there are marks or debris.
- Rub the screen with a cloth to remove dust and dirt. Do not rub the cloth vigorously as it may crack the display.
- With the front of the display clean, turn the monitor so that the screen is facing away from you.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow large pieces of dust and debris off the back of the monitor, vents, or other surfaces.
- Feel free to wipe the back of the monitor as well.
This basic wipedown and cleaning is now complete. Then use the solution to wipe the monitor display and chassis.
Step 2: Clean the monitor using cleaning solution or water on a microfiber cloth
Use a screen cleaning solution or water for this second step. This cleans up your computer monitor more thoroughly than a basic wipedown. However, do not spray the solution directly onto the screen. Doing so can allow the solution to seep into the crevices and damage the components.
- Spray the cleaning solution onto the microfiber cloth and do not soak it. Just dampen the cloth. If using water, lightly dampen the cloth.
- Place the cloth on the screen and start rubbing gently. Repeat this pattern until the entire screen is wiped, but don’t use too much force.
- Let the screen dry, then take a second microfiber cloth and rub it in the same pattern to remove any marks the solution may have left.
- If necessary, rotate the monitor away from the screen and repeat steps 2 and 3 to clean the back, sides, and non-screen areas.
Step 3: Reconnect Cables and Power
This final step allows you to reconnect the removed cables to your monitor. If you’re not sure where the cable goes, you can check the port markings to match the connections. If you were using a USB-C dongle, you can also plug the cable into the dongle instead of your PC.
