Cleanup efforts in communities hit by devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa earlier this year have yielded positive results, including the collection and recycling of 8 tonnes of plastic bottles.
One of the major cleanup efforts is being driven by PETCO, South Africa’s plastics producers responsibility organization. After the flood, PETCO came up with a proposal to focus on extracting his PET debris from the environment. PET items were washed into waterways, blocking sensitive and critical access routes for four communities at the epicenter of the flood.
The floods, which caused an estimated 17 billion ZAR (€1 billion) in damages and displaced 40,000 people, destroyed the state’s sanitation infrastructure, pushed solid waste out of dumps and landfills, and severely affected local communities. posed a health risk.
