These days waterways are as full of debris as roads. Charlotte County said he will begin the canal cleaning process on November 1st.
They start at the Hayward Canal off El Jobian.
“I’ve seen styrofoam, big metal plates, tree branches, debris,” Kelly Conway said.
“Mainly building materials” is what Mark Allen said he saw.
Allen and a few neighbors had no idea of the county’s plans when they decided to clean the canal themselves.
“We have nothing against the county we just decided to live here. This is our area. We want to take care of it,” Allen said. “It’s kind of funny what we did. They had a jet ski and they went down on the jet ski. We got on the jet ski, took the hammer, drilled everything, and then I tied the straps.”
They used straps to pull a lot of debris out of the water and onto the curb.
“It was so heavy that we had to drag it with the truck,” Allen said. “His one trailer crossing the canal lost an entire roof, one of which is his three-quarters about that roof.”
Metal panels cover his right-of-way, but at least his canal is clean.
“Hi, that’s great,” said Conway.
The county plans to start with ocean canals and then transition to freshwater and major waterways.
