The City of Jacksonville and Keep Jacksonville Beautiful will be hosting a Beach Cleanup on Saturday, November 5th from 8am to 10am.
Volunteer check-in is at the Sea Walk Pavilion, 75 1.st Streets North, Jacksonville Beach. Volunteer must be 18 years of age or older or be accompanied by an adult. Participants will be provided with a Community Service Certificate.
Formerly called the Right Whale Festival Cleanup, it has been held for the past 14 years to coincide with the return migration of North Atlantic right whales to Florida, the only known calving ground in the southeastern United States.
Since its inception in 2009, the event has attracted 1,879 volunteers, donating 3,510 hours and collecting 34,320 pounds (or 17.16 tons) of beach debris. His hourly Volunteer Value for these volunteers during that time period is $75,468, making the cost avoidance from collecting all that debris $37,122. Over the past 14 years, this will save her $112,590 for taxpayers.
Last year, 200 volunteers participated in the event, contributing 400 hours to pick up 3,640 pounds of debris, avoiding $15,820 in volunteer value and costs per hour combined.
