New Orleans — The city of New Orleans is slowly but surely trying to combat illegal dumping.
Garbage includes furniture, appliances, and tires that are always visible and are dumped in various locations around the city, creating an eyesore and safety hazard.
An interim budget of $1 million was allocated to the city’s health department to help remedy the problem. The city hired three more crew members from MDL Enterprises to join his one crew member who was trying to fix the problem himself. New crew members can pick up all debris except tires.
Only former city pick-up crews are licensed to handle it.
In addition to the additional crew, the city plans to open two convenience stations that will allow residents to transport large amounts of goods without having to haul them to landfills.
“We are also working steadily to increase our ability to crack down on the bad guys dumping in our streets, whether it is illegal dumping or the tens of thousands of scrap tires plaguing our neighborhoods. Catching the perpetrators allows for a tougher crackdown,” said Matt Torre, the city’s health director.
Torri admits that even with the added resources, it “takes a long time” to make a big impact on a big problem.
