The cleaning of hard-to-reach areas of the Altamaha Canal was approved by the Glynn County Finance Commission at its meeting Monday.
There have been canal cleanups in the past, but some areas are only accessible by boat and are targeted.
Commission chairman Wayne Neal said he had no intention of making any changes to the canal.
“What we’re trying to do is clear out the debris that’s blocking the drainage,” he said.
The Commissioners unanimously approved the proposed funding of $150,000 for the project.
The second phase of the Pier Village Drainage Improvement Project, which has invested more than $1.3 million, was unanimously approved by the committee members.
The project is funded by SPLOST 16 and is designed to create redundancy to prevent flooding in the Pier Village area where Phase 1 took place.
Harry Driggers Boulevard has been subdivided from Glynco Parkway to US 17 with a capital allocation of District 3. The work was done last week because a contractor was in the area and said he would have to wait if the work wasn’t done now due to prior commitments.
New safety railings have also been installed at the end of the old Back River Bridge, a popular fishing spot. The $5,612 labor cost is similar to that done at the end of St. Simons Pier.
Committee members voted to accept a $7,500 grant from the Georgia Public Library Service to enable a new lighting project at the Brunswick Library. The total cost of the work is $104,500, and the 2023 budget will provide him with $97,000.
